Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG)

What Is ESG?

Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty is a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure that involves remodelling of the stomach using the Overstitch device. It is performed entirely through the mouth - there are no incisions or scars.

Advantages

  • Outpatient procedure (possible overnight stay)
  • No scarring - entirely endoscopic
  • Tissue preservation
  • Potentially reversible
  • 15–18% total body weight loss
  • Does not preclude future bariatric surgery if needed

Effectiveness

ESG is safe and effective for the treatment of obesity, with durable long-term results for at least up to 5 years. It bridges the gap between lifestyle interventions and surgical weight loss procedures.

Safety

ESG is considered to be a very safe intervention. The most common post-procedure experiences include nausea and mild discomfort, which typically resolve within a few days.

Cost

ESG is not currently covered by Medicare or private health insurance in Australia. Patients self-fund the procedure or may explore superannuation early release options.
