Weight Loss Medications
Medication selection depends on your current weight and BMI, medical and surgical co-morbidities, personal and family history of cancers, and individual response to treatment.
Oral Medications
- Phentermine (Duromine) - appetite suppressant for short-term use
- Qsymia - combination of phentermine and topiramate
- Contrave - combination of bupropion and naltrexone
Newer Weight Loss Injections
- Saxenda (liraglutide) - daily injection
- Ozempic or Wegovy (semaglutide) - weekly injection
- Mounjaro (tirzepatide) - weekly injection
Will I Benefit from Weight Loss Drugs?
Class 1 obesity (BMI 30–35) may benefit from drugs or endoscopic intervention alone. Higher BMIs typically need more aggressive strategies combining multiple approaches.
Side Effects
Indigestion, nausea, vomiting and change in bowel habits are common side effects of weight loss medications. These are contraindicated in patients with medullary thyroid cancer or MEN type 2 syndrome.
