What is Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty?
Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) is a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure that involves remodelling of the stomach using the Overstitch device. Sutures are placed endoscopically to reduce the size of the stomach, helping you feel full sooner and for longer.
Advantages
- Outpatient procedure (possible overnight stay)
- No external scarring
- Tissue preservation - potentially reversible
- Weight loss of 15–18% of total body weight
- Does not preclude future bariatric surgery if needed
Effectiveness
ESG has been shown to be safe and effective for the treatment of obesity, with durable long-term results for at least up to 5 years. Combined with lifestyle modifications, ESG can deliver significant and sustained weight loss.
Safety
ESG is considered to be a very safe intervention. The most common post-procedure symptoms are nausea and mild abdominal discomfort, which typically resolve within a few days.
Cost
ESG is not currently covered by Medicare or private health insurance in Australia. The procedure is available through self-funding, and superannuation early release may be an option for eligible patients.
Detailed costs will be discussed during your consultation with Dr Fazal.
How to Book
You will need a referral letter from your GP. Once you have your referral, you can request an appointment with Dr Fazal to discuss whether ESG is the right option for you.
