Gastric Balloon

Gastric balloon insertion is a non-surgical intervention designed to achieve significant weight loss. The balloon is made of soft silicone, and is usually inserted inside the stomach with endoscopy, in a deflated state. Once inside, it is filled with 500-700ml of saline. It is left in place for a period of 6 or 12 months depending on the type of balloon inserted. At the end of this period, the balloon needs to be removed with another endoscopy.

It works by occupying space and prolonging gastric emptying time. Both these mechanisms lead to decreased appetite, reduced food intake and resulting weight loss.
